Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the English name Dimethyl sulfoxide and the molecular formula (CH₃)₂SO.

At room temperature, it is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid with hygroscopic and flammable properties. It exhibits high polarity, a high boiling point, non-protonic characteristics, and is miscible with water.

It has extremely low toxicity, It has good thermal stability and does not mix with alkanes. It is soluble in water, ethanol, propanol, ether, benzene, and chloroform, among most organic compounds, earning it the reputation as the “universal solvent.”

It is the most potent solvent among commonly used organic solvents. It can dissolve most organic compounds, including carbohydrates, polymers, peptides, and many inorganic salts and gases.

It can dissolve solutes equivalent to 50-60% of its own weight (other general solvents can only dissolve 10-20%), making it crucial in sample management and high-throughput drug screening. Under certain conditions, when dimethyl sulfoxide comes into contact with acyl chlorides, an explosive reaction may occur.

Applications

Application of Dimethyl sulfoxide 67-68-5

Used as an analytical reagent and gas chromatography stationary phase, it is also used as a solvent in ultraviolet spectroscopy analysis, as well as a reaction medium for aromatic hydrocarbon extraction, resins, and dyes, a solvent for nylon polymerization, and a solvent for filament extraction.

It can be used as an organic solvent, reaction medium, and organic synthesis intermediate. It has a wide range of applications. This product has a high selective extraction capacity and is used as a polymerization and condensation solvent for acrylic resins and poly sulfone resins, a polymerization and spinning solvent for polyacrylonitrile and acetate fibers, an extraction solvent for separating alkanes and aromatics, and an extraction solvent for aromatics and butadiene.

.

nylon spinning, plastic solvent, and as a reaction medium in the production of organic synthetic dyes and pharmaceuticals. In the pharmaceutical field, dimethyl sulfoxide has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects and strong skin penetration, enabling it to dissolve certain drugs and facilitate their penetration into the human body for therapeutic purposes.

Utilizing this carrier property, dimethyl sulfoxide can also be used as an additive in pesticides. Adding a small amount of dimethyl sulfoxide to certain pesticides helps them penetrate into plants, thereby enhancing their efficacy.

Dimethyl sulfoxide can also serve as a dyeing solvent, decolorizing agent, and dyeing carrier for synthetic fibers, as well as an absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide, a modifier for synthetic fibers, an antifreeze agent, and a dielectric medium, brake fluid, and extractant for rare metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1:What is the purity level of the products you offer?
A: Our products typically offer high purity levels (e.g., Analytical Grade, Reagent Grade, or specific Industrial Grades), suitable for both laboratory research and industrial manufacturing. Please refer to the product specification sheet for exact technical indicators.
Q2:Which industries can these products be used in?
A: These chemicals are widely used in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical manufacturing, agrochemical production, plastics processing, coating and paint dilution, electronic cleaning, textile dyeing, and analytical testing.
Q3:What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?
A: The MOQ depends on the specific product grade and packaging size. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with our sales team or check the detailed product page for comprehensive information.
Q4:How should these chemicals be stored safely?
A: They should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, away from heat sources, sparks, and incompatible materials (such as strong oxidizers, strong acids/bases). Containers must be kept tightly sealed.
Q5:How should spills or leaks be handled?
A: Immediately evacuate non-essential personnel, eliminate all ignition sources, and proceed with cleanup only after ensuring personal protection (wearing appropriate PPE). Small spills can be absorbed with inert materials (like sand or earth), collected in a sealed container, and disposed of according to local regulations. Prevent material from entering sewers or drains.
