Base

Xylene is used as a solvent. In this application, the mixture of isomers is often referred to as xylenes or xylol. Solvent xylene often contains a small percentage of ethylbenzene. Like the individual isomers, the mixture is colourless, sweet smelling, and highly flammable. Application of xylene is extensive and includes, but is not limited to, printing, rubber, and leather industries.

Applications

Xylene is a crucial aromatic hydrocarbon primarily utilized as a chemical feedstock and a versatile solvent.

1. Chemical Feedstock (Raw Material for Synthesis)
Production of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA):
ρ-Xylene (Para-xylene) is the dominant feedstock.
PTA is essential for manufacturing Polyester fibers (e.g., Dacron) and PET plastic (used in bottles).
Production of Phthalic Anhydride (PA):
ο-Xylene (Ortho-xylene) is the main precursor.
PA is used to produce Plasticizers, alkyd resins, and certain dyes.
Production of Isophthalic Acid:
m-Xylene (Meta-xylene) can be used to produce Isophthalic Acid.
This acid is used in high-performance polyester resins and protective coatings.

2. Solvent Applications (Carrier and Diluent)
Paints and Coatings:
Used extensively as a solvent for paints, varnishes, and lacquers.
It helps dissolve resins and allows for proper application and drying control.
Adhesives and Sealants:
Serves as a thinner and solvent component for various glues and caulking agents.
Cleaning Agent:
Employed in industrial cleaning, particularly in the printing, leather, and rubber industries.

3. Fuel Component
Gasoline Blending:
Used as a component in gasoline to boost the octane rating, improving the fuel’s anti-knock properties.
